Note | Simon Stevens was a resident of Lancaster when he married, but apparently lived in Marlborough, for a few years subsequent to his marriage. He certainly owned the covenant in the church and had his first two children baptised there, but, by 1708, had apparently returned to Lancaster, as his son, Simon, was baptised there, in May 1708. About 1724, he went to Plainfield, where he remained for about six years. His wife, Mary, was living in 1725, in Plainfield, as is shown by the land records. He was a blacksmith by trade and there are many conveyances in his name, mainly family deeds. See Family History Book for lists of many deeds. From these deeds it is evident that Simon, like his father, divided his property among his sons before his death, probably giving his daughgters a share when they were married. He left no will and no administration was taken on his estate. His widow survived him for about seventeen years. She left a will, made 25 June 1772, in which she gave to seven daughters, namely Huldah Witherby of Lunenburg; Patience Hunt of Hardwick; Mary Stevens of Warwick; Dorothy Rice of Charlemont; Sarah Rise of Rutland; Phebe Brigfham and Lucy Barnard of Marlborough; son-inlaw, Joel Barnard, executor; witnesses: Aaron Barnes, Fortunatus Wheeler, John Stevens. |
