Note | It is probable that Joseph was working in Whitestown and that John Sawyer was alkso there, for a short time. The young couple settled in Petersham, where they spent their lives. As the birth of Joseph is not of record in either Lancaster or Plainfield, Conn., it is only possible to conjecture the probable date. Since his father deeded land to him in Petersham, for "good service performed," it seems, from the wording, that he was then of full age, and no further service was to be expected of him by the father. In 1745, we have his intention of marriage and in 1748, a further figt of land by his father. Must have been about age 90 years at his death. His homestead was about three milkes east of Petersham Village, on the road to Hubbardston; the place was burned, soon after it passed out of the Stevens' family, bet. 1864 and 1870. |
