Mary Keenan, born in 1836 was the second child of Thomas and Hannah Callaghan Keenan. The Keenan family was in Kane County, Illinois by 1840 as Thomas Keenan is listed on the US Census of that year. It is believed that David Callaghan (O'Callaghan) who lived near the Keenans in Illinois and who witnessed several of their deeds, was a brother of Hannah. Bioth Thomas and Hannah Keenan were born in Ireland, as was David Callaghan, but the exact locationis unknown at this time.

On 26 Apr 1854 Thomas and Hannah sold their Kane County, Illinois property for $3,000.00 and the family moved to Benton County, Iowa. The Keenans had seven known children.
