Note | Was captain in the East India Company's Service, Married in India. Both he and his wife and their two children were killed in the Indian Mutiny. From gravestone: George Skene died 4 June 1831 aged 20 Andrew Skene died 23 Jan 1846 aged 32 Alexander Skene aged 40 Beatrice Margaret Herschal aged 21 murdered 8 June 1857 Mary Isabella Frances murdered 8 June 1857 Beatrice Harriet Annie murdered 8 June 1857 St Nicholas Church: Alexander Skene and his family. This stone tells of the murder of a young mother of only 21 years and her two infant daughters during the Indian mutiny. The young woman was Beatrice Margaret Herschal, wife of Alexander Skene, the Superintendent of the Jhansi Presidedency of Bengal, who himself died at the age of 40. He was also captain of a company in India. Also commemorated by the stone are other children and grandchildren of Dr. Charles Skene, a physician in Aberdeen. They were George Skene, an Ensign in Berhmapore who died in 1831, aged only 20; and Andrew Skene, assistant surgeon, who died in Brecon in 1846 aged 32. |
