Note | 1881 Census for birth. Naval Pensioner. BMD for birth 1 Feb 1835. Baptism: Wesleyan Methodist. Ebenezar Chapel I bought a copy of an 1896 The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine that has a story written by Mary Grace Thornton, daughter of Sir Edward Thornton, the Ambassador to Russia. I found them in the 1880 Census living in Washington, DC. Sir Edward Thornton, Minister to Great Britain, was born in England. His wife Mary was born in Scotland. Mary Grace and her brother Francis E. were born in South America. Mary Grace was born @ 1858, and Francis born @ 1859. Mary Grace was an eye witness to the coronation of Alexander III which took place in 1883. I believe this article would be of interest to anyone with a connection to this THORNTON line. The story is full of detail and there are drawings also. Please contact me Kathy@craftsbykathy.com if you have an interest in this magazine which is over 100 years old. II. Emma Jessie, b. 26 Sept. 1S6T; m. 2j June, 1889, Edward Thornton, Esq., 2nd Secretary Diplomatic Service, only son of Sir Edward Thornton, G.C.13., P.C, Count of Cassilha.<! in Portugal, formerly Ambassador at Washing- ton, St. Petersburg, and Constantinople ; and has issue, £dward, 6. 27 Oct. IsUo, and Mary Irene, b. 10 June, 1890. My gradfather Richard Thornton had a brother Sir Edward Thornton. Sir Edward Thornton lived in India and Natal. In Natal he was with the civil service (Minister of Health) My grandfather Richard Thornton died in Africa Christmas 1934.My gradfather and his brothers were from Norfolk. Could they be some connection? Not too many people who are knighted happen to have the same name. Please let me know if you have information that can help me with my family tree. Tks My records indicate he married Elizabeth Virginia North, from London. Edward was related to Sir Frederick North, Lord Chancellor and Earl of Guilford.
