Note

Much of the data for L's family and that pertaining to the next two generations is based on an old letter, written by Louisa (Stevens) Greeley to her brother Col. John-Harrington Stevens in 1865. See Family History Book for a verbatim copy. Lemuel Stevens was raised in Petersham but went to Vermont before his marriage. His father may have given him land there, as he evidently ovwned property in Vermont, for in Joseph's will he gave his son, Cyprian, land in Barnet. While resident in Newfane, Lemuel was an overseer of the highways and also saw service:"The following is a true List of Officers and soldiers who marched to Brattleboro in the Muster Dec 24, 1782, pursuant to orders received from Col. John Swegants of said Brattleboro to suppress insurrection and disturbance then subsisting in those parts, under the command of Lt. Ward Eager." (Vermont Rolls, 615.) He was still of Newfane, in 1790, being listed in the census of that year, with two males above 16, three below 16, and three females in his family. Following his wife's death, five years later, he moved to Canada, as did many others at this period, especially from Vermont. Lemuel probably felt the need of more land for his large family. These settlers were of great value to Canada and formed the dominant element in that region, called later the "Eastern Townships." He was accompanied by his son, Artemas Stevens and by his sisters, Polly (Stevens) Baker and Dolly (Stevens) Barnes. Whether his brothers, Simon and John also immigrated to Canada with him is not certain, but from the old letter, it seems probable that they did.
