St Nicholas Church: Alexander Skene and his family. This stone tells of the murder of a young mother of only 21 years and her two infant daughters during the Indian mutiny. The young woman was Beatrice Margaret Herschal, wife of Alexander Skene, the Superintendent of the Jhansi Presidedency of Bengal, who himself died at the age of 40. He was also captain of a company in India. Also commemorated by the stone are other children and grandchildren of Dr. Charles Skene, a physician in Aberdeen. They were George Skene, an Ensign in Berhmapore who died in 1831, aged only 20; and Andrew Skene, assistant surgeon, who died in Brecon in 1846 aged 32.
